Chapter Twenty-Four

Raven stomped into the once peaceful and tidy house and stumbled over a pair of tennis shoes lying in the doorway of the great room. She rolled her eyes at Lil Ken and Kyle for laughing under their breath. Kelsey walked over and removed the two buckets of hot wings and a family size container of fries from her hands. When Kingsley got a whiff of the food, he eased his way out of his seat nestled between his brothers on the sofa. He followed Kelsey to the dinette table on the other side of the room. Raven was tempted to yell at the child to go away. The only time he interacted with anyone other than Lil Ken and Kyle was whenever food was involved. Kenny had threatened to withhold meals from him for an entire day if he didn’t start talking to him and stop acting like a baby.

“Are y’all gonna eat or what?” Raven asked, sorting through the carton of celery stalks and carrots sticks.

Lil Ken looked up from the video game he was playing with Kyle. “We ate already.”

Raven popped her lips and slammed the carton on the table. “What did y’all eat and why didn’t anyone inform me before I bought fifty bucks worth of food?”

“Lil Ken fried pork chops and made a broccoli, rice, and cheese casserole. It was good. Your boy, Kelsey, called Dad and asked for hot wings.”

Raven suddenly lost her appetite. She snatched her purse from the table and stormed up the double marble staircase mumbling and cursing. Things had not been the same since Kendrick’s sons had invaded the house. Raven couldn’t stand the older two. They weren’t rude or disrespectful, but they did subtle things to get under her skin. Kelsey was sweet, but the little fat one was spoiled rotten.

Raven was especially frustrated with how Kendrick had orchestrated the change in visitation without even speaking with her first. The buzz around the firm was that he had only fought to have his boys for the summer to stick it to his ex-wife. He’d become insanely jealous after finding out Audrey was dating some young, good-looking probation officer. Hilda, Kendrick’s longtime administrative assistant, and a group of other employees believed he still loved Audrey. They said he always would no matter how many women he’d bedded in the past or would in the future. Kendrick’s sudden change in attitude in recent months had led Raven to believe that it was true. He had been downright mean and moody. His interest wasn’t in his sons or his lopsided relationship with Raven. She wasn’t sure why she was even there other than to babysit the boys while Kendrick hung out all times of the night and to answer his every beck and call.

Torrance was surprised to get a call from Aubrey asking that they meet at Ingleside Pizza for lunch. He agreed to be there by one o’clock after his job interview at an alternative school. Torrance had no idea why Aubrey wanted to talk with him.
